REASONS FOR VISIT
Mr. Nash In Britain
Some of the reasons for his present visit to England were given by the hew Zealand -Minister to Washington Mr. Nash, in n broadcast from England this week. Mr. Nash said his work in Britain had been based on New Zealand s desire to decide what further steps could be taken to ensure that the Dominion’s war effort, was the best and most useful that could possibly be put forward. '.rhe conutry’s reserves had been placed til. the disposal of those responsible for the successful prosecution of the war, mid New Zealand had always consulted Britain very closely on the lines which her contribution could best be directed. "New Zealand's available resources include Iwo which lire particularly outstanding,” Mr. Nash said. "First there are her armed forces for the lighting fronts, mid secondly there are her foodstuffs, notably meat, butter mid cheese. The question now arises as to which of these two weapons of war is the most important at. this stage of operations. Should we start producing more food or send more men overseas?” Mr. Nash said he had discussed the matter in detail with .Mr. Churchill mid his colleagues and reported back to Mr. Fraser in New Zealand. Anol her thing Ihe New Zealand Government wanted to talk over with the British Government was the disparities which existed between import and export prices. It was common knowledge that New Zealand had been able to keep down the price of goods she sold to the United Kingdom to n considerably greater degree than the United Kingdom had kept down the prices of goods New Zealand bought from Britain. This meant a disparity was created in the values of .the two countries’ mutual trading. Mr. Nash said he had been negotiating for an adjustment which it was hoped would befair to both countries.
