Activities In Wellington

District

The assistant commissioner in charge of the St. John Ambulance Brigade for the Wellington district, Mr. AV. AV. Dutton, in his annual report states that tlie extension of the work in the Manawatu district has proved of sufficient importance to warrant the formation of a separate district. Three nursing divisions, one ambulance division, three cadet nursing divisions and five cadet ambulance divisions were registered during the year. The totaljiumber of members is now 3252, while 75 nurses and >lBO ambulance men are serving with the military.

During the year 2311 eases were treated on public duty when members were rendering their services at various sports grounds and at other public activities. A total of cases were treated by members who were not on public duty; tti.3 cases were privately nursed. A total of 2509 hours were rendered at the casualty clearing station and 1931 hours were devoted to.honorary service with the AVellington Free Ambulance. A large number of members belong to the Blood Transfusion Service and 10S responded to calls to donate blood. During the year members of the AVellinglon and Hutt Corps assisted at the casualty clearing station on the arrival of hospital and transport ships bringing sick and wounded servicemen from overseas. The n’umber of men required varied from four to 20. On one occasion seven men worked 70 hours. In addition men have been engaged in transporting sick and wounded to all parts of New Zealand. Jinny hours of voluntary service have been spent travelling, often under trying conditions. • In addition to war-time activities, public duties on all football, hockey , and basketball grounds were continued throughout the whiter months and on baseball and athletic grounds throughout the summer. Mr. Dutton expresses his appreciation for the loyal co-operation of all officers who have made it possible to render service during the past year.
