Saving Electricity
Sir.—Referring to the appeals being made for economy in the use of electrici tj, I think perhaps that, the exhortations would carry more Weight if local authorities were to set a better example. Street lights in the area in which I reside (I cannot say whether it is so everywhere) may be seen burning for fully two hours after, daylight. The other morning I actually saw them alight at 7 o'clock. —I am, etc., ORIENTAL BAY. Wellington, February 23. Sir, —I have been greatly interested in the warnings and appeals given by the. electricity controller to all private consumers to cut down their consumption. Meat rationing will commence on March 6. and housewives will hare to cook more vegetables to make up for this. I do not blame the Government for tne. shortage of electricity. I understand that the war is responsible. What I cannot understand is why the private consumers should be asked to. cut down, their consumption of electricity before tEe radio service is curtailed. Sureiy the people of New Zealand would gladly accept the position if they had the choice between, power for the stove, or a silent radio. Of course, some people will say, “But think of the people who will be out of work if our radio stations are closed down.” To them I would answer tha’; the papers are full of “Wauteds” every day aud real wartime jobs are still available. But I expect that we should still be crooned to sleep even if we have to go without a hot meal, so that is something to be thankful for.—l am, etc., HOUSEWIFE. Hawera, February 23.
