BOWLING PAIRS
Champion Of Champions
Tournament A high standard of play was maintained In the Wellington Bowling Centre’s champion of champions pairs tournament on the Newtown Bowling Club’s green yesterday. The weather was beautifully fine, and the green, which was of a nice medium pace, played very truly. The Wellington pair. Walker and Cronin (■skip), who had a bye in the first round, figured in two of the most-exciting games of the day. In the second round, they just managed to beat the Hutt pair, McIntyre and Hadwln (skip), 23-22. . The Wellington .pair rang on a seven on the third set, but Hutt retaliated with a six in the eighteenth end. On the nineteenth Hadwin got in three. Time was called, making the twentieth end the last. When the skips changed over, Hadwin was lying three for a tie. Cronin drew the shot, which Hadwin promptly removed. Cronin then drew another, which was not (Jisplaced, and the Wellington pair won a most exciting game by a point. The Wellington pair started off so brilliantly against Wilson and Turnbull (Hataitai) in the third round that they led by ID to six on the ninth. The Hataitai pair then found the pace of the green, and, drawing brilliantly, had reduced the leeway to one point on the sixteenth end. Hataitai rang on four on the seventeenth end to lead 23-20. Wellington scored three on the eighteenth, making the scores 23-all. Hataitai notched two on the nineteenth, and one on the twentieth, to lead 26-23. The Wellington pair were lying four to win on the twenty-first end, but Biadwin, with his second drive, ’burnt the head, and, as the time limit had expired, Hataitai won a great uphill fight by 20 to 23. The tournament was well managed by the officials of the Newtown clu'b, the secretary of the Wellington Bowling Centre, Mr. C. R. Ingram, lending a helping hajid.
