Bursaries For Private Schools

“This matter is nt present under consideration,” said the Minister of Education, Mr. Mason, when he was given permission to make an immediate reply in the House yesterday to a question on bursaries for private schools, notice of which was given by Mr. Harker (Opposition, Waipawa). Mr. Harker asked that in view of the acknowledged high standard of education at many of the private schools and other secondary schools the'Minister reconsider the Secondary Schools Bursaries Regulations, 1943, wffiich declared that no bursary should be tenable to any private school or at any school that for the time being was not approved for accrediting purposes, with a view to making all such bursaries tenable at auy school capable of giving to any bursary winner the requisite standard of education.

In n’note to his question Mr. Harker said the funds from which the bursaries were provided were contributed to by the general body of taxpayers, and all parents should be placed on an equal basis in the provision of opportunity to avail themselves of bursaries awarded to their children. The Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Holland, said the question was one which members would like to discuss and he hoped it would be placed on the order paper. /
