Flight Sergeant E. E. De Joux (Christchurch). who won the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal and the Distinguished Flying Medal, has completed three tours of operations as an air-gunner, and has shot down five enemy aircraft. He shot down three of Goering’s Yellow-nose Squadron in 1941 when returning from a daylight raid in a Stirling over Brest, where he attacked the Seharnhorst. the Gneisenau, and the Prinz Eugen. Seven Messerschmitts attacked the Stirling, which returned safely to its base. De Joux shot down his fourth while returning in . a Halifax bomber from Cologne. His fifth was shot doivn over an English airfield. It was a Junkers 88 intruder which was attempting to shoot down members of the R.A.F. who were landing. lhe Halifax and the Junkers circled each other for a time till De Joux fired a long burst. 1 he kill was confirmed five hours later. De Joux is hoping to begin his fourth tour shortly. He is broadcasting to New Zealand or March 7.
