It is also popular iu various European armies, particularly in Russia, where a very high standard of play obtains, and the game receives official recognition and encouragement. In this connexion it is interesting to note that chess has several devotees in local military establishments. A very successful tourney was recently held by the guards vital points staff. S'/Sgt. R. A. Godtscbalk and Sgt. A. E Elgar, the two leading players, were paired in the final round, the honours going to the former, who, as bon. secretary of the Wellington and Wadestown Chess Clubs, did much for the advancement of the game in this centre in pre war days. Last week a six-a-side match was played at the Upper TTutt, Guards Vital Points defeating a Trentham military camp team bv two games (4-2). S/Sgt. Godtscbalk, Cpl. E. J. Miller, Cpl. 11. Sfichbury, and Sgt. T. 11. Ebbett scored for the winners, and S/M. S. Morris and Pte. <7. Ellison scored for th.? losers. Other chess fixtures, are to be played in this area, and it is hoped to arraugt* for a team to play against an Army side at Auckland,
