STOLE 204 BOOKS

Woman Granted Probation

An American medical authority on bibliomania—a craving for books peculiar to recluses, elderly and lonely people—was advanced by counsel in the Magistrates' Court, Wellington, yesterday on behalf of Patricia Zita Weggery, ’ 3S, clerk, charged with stealing ‘204 books valued at £'s(), belonging to the Wellington City Public Library (70). South's Bookshop (.26) and Whitcombe and Tombs (10S). Chief Detective Thompson said the thefts from the shops amounted to shoplifting. Defendant sold a large number of the books to a man for £2O. .She was quite frank with Detective W. Harper, who interviewed her. The books had been recovered. Counsel. Mr. G. I. Joseph, admitted that the extent of the thefts was an extenuating factor in that it. showed the dishonesty to be caused by love of books. After an illness defendant had not left her home, except to go to work, for four years, and in that time she read 10 to 12 books a week. He then quoted the American medical authority on bibliomania, but Mr. Stout, S.M., said this could not be accepted. Defendant was admitted to probation for 18 months.
