RUSSIANS CLOSER TO PSKOV t(By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Received February 16, 1.45 a.m.) LONDON, February 15. “The Red Army has succeeded in baiting the German advance in the slight wbclge they forced north-west of Svenigorodka in their desperate attempts to break through to rescue what remains of the German army in the Kanev trap, says the Moscow “Red Star." “The German command has been making frantic efforts tq shatter our encircling ring, and decided to strive for a break-through at any cost.” The enemy yesterday launched an onslaught against a narrow sector in three waves. Russian forces beat off the first two, inflicting heavy losses on German tanks and troop-carriers. The third attack with fresh forces followed immediately after the second and the Germans succeeded in making inconsiderable headway till our concentrated anti-tank, fire halted them. "The enemy suffered heavy losses yesterday in the fighting for Korsun where a formation attempting withdrawal was caught and cut to pieces.” Reuter’s Moscow correspondent reports that the battle for Latvia and the Gulf of Riga is widening as further gains in their double drive on either side of the Narva and Luga railways bring the Russians closer to Pskov. Heavy fighting is going on south of Luga as the Germans put up rearguard resistance against „the (Russian drive.
