55 FOURS QUALIFY

N.Z. Bowls Tourney RAIN INTERRUPTS PLAY (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, January 20. Section play in the fours competition of the New Zealand championship bowls tournament was concluded today. Heavy rain throughout the night made most of the greens unlit for play tins morning. Play was resumed at 1 p.m. in mild conditions witli the greens in good order though a little heavy. In order to accommodate the final two rounds in the afternoon, games were restricted to 21 ends each, with a time limit of two hours and a quarter. P. Munn, skip of the champion rink in 1941, lias shown in all games that he has with him a strong combination. He never looked like losing any of the eight games. Tlie only other quartet to win eight games was the Taieri four, skipped by S. Riach. who had the distinction of winning all his games in section play in each of tlie three competitions. He scored a runaway win by 30-6 against W. R. Sprosen (Linwood) in the seventh round, but he had a close call against XV. Gilbert (Kelburn) in the last game, which he won 18-17. Among the teams with seven wins is another Canterbury four skipped by tlie exchampion R. Haworth, who had little difficulty in winning both games yesterday. J. Veitch’s (Dunedin) four .scored two good wins. They beat R. A. Barnsdale (Christchurch), 18-10. and in. the eighth round won an exciting game against M. J. Squire (Hawera) bv a margin of one point. IT. IVilson’s (Mt. Edeu) team met its second defeat in the seventh round at tlie hands of T. E. Alitehell (Blenheim), 10-13, but the Aucklanders wou their last game fairly comfortably. Four teams qualified in this section, but one of those eliminated was L. W. Besley’s (New Brighton) quartet, which was runner-up to Munn last .year. Mitchell beat Besley, 19-17. G. O. Grant’s (Invercargill) four lost only one game, suffering a lapse from form in the eighth round in which they were beaten by J. Glover (St. John’s XVanganui), 22-13. The southerners, however, finished at the head of their section. Several Dunedin teams wou seven games and A. S. JlcDougall’s (Caversham) four, which won both its games yesterday, headed its section. Also qualifying were T. Gray (Kelburn) and J. Scott (Dunedin). G. A. Deare (Carlton) required to win his last game to qualify, but XV. Efford (Edgeware) put him out of the competition by winning 31-19. A. XV. -Macdonald (Balmacewen). who also suffered only one loss, beat J. R. Smith's (Elmwood) four 23-16 in the seventh round, and though Smith beat J. C. Tanliu (Auckland Transport) 16-10 in his last game, he failed to qualify. L. J. Edwards (Balelutha) went right through the competition undefeated till he met J. Hutchison (Dunedin) in the last round. Hutchison winning 25-10. N. Donaldson (Ponsonby) is probably one of the youngest skips in the competition, but he has shown the judgment of a veteran in most of his games. Yesterday. he beat J. XV. Stephenson (Nelson) 23-S in the seventh round and finished up with a win over C. Spearman (Christchurch R.S.A.) by the narrow margin of one point. Those Who Qualified.
