LIGHT RAIN AT TRENTHAM

Trentham enjoyed the cooling effects of a showery afternoon yesterday, between 15 and 20 points of rain falling between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. The fall was not sufficient to affect the tracks, hut it laid the dust and would assist, in removing.some of the fire from the ground, which is very hard everywhere except on the course proper where the sprinklers have been at work. Kraclsets for Saturday. , Brackets on the second Oay card of the Wellington meeting are as follows:— Trial Plate: Foxstar and Foxrose. Camp Handicap: Bascule and Arustra. Douro Handicap: Tldelcss and larcieal. Alienate and Crackerjack, 1 oxaila and Gold -Dip, Old Glory and Our Pat, Kaging Main and Te Ruru. Change of Rider. , , , Palora, who finished third in the l.elegranh Handicap on the first day at I rentham, will be ridden by W. J. Broughton in the Metropolitan Handicap on the second day. Colais, from the same stable, will also be ridden by Broughton. Merry May Injured. Merry May’s failure to run up to her Auckland Cup form in the Wellington Cup ■was because of her -being galloped on and cutting a leg. -She has -been returned to Auckland with her stablemate Sleepy Fox, 'who found the going too firm for him. In Trial Plate. Among the acceptors for the Trial Plate at Trentham this week is Priority, a three-year-old gelding by Baffles -by Belle Star, thus a half-brother to Majority, Minority and Bella Fox, and he races in the same interests, those of Mr. G. Tremlett. Priority has had only one race, to date. He contested the division of the Huatoki Plate at New Plymouth on December 27, won by Entertainer, and ran unplaced. Won a Coast Double. Among the fresh horses contesting the Anniversary Handicap at Trentham this week Is All Night, an unsound but wellperformed southerner who is trained by A. B. Stove at Riccarton for Mr. W. Payne. The last time All Night raced was at the Reefton meeting, where he won the Highweight Handicap with 10.6 from the Douro Handicap candidate Wise Girl, who carried 8.8, and later in the day won the Farewell Handicap with 10:4. Both races were run over seven furlongs. Coast form is not usually very strong, -but in the Farewell Handicap All Night beat Mauretania, 9.0, who was an open sprint Winner at Ricearton last Easter.

Won Race Last Year. F. C. Christie, who won the Douro Handicap last year with Prince Shad, has Old Glory engaged in the race this week. Old (Glory is a maiden by’ Solicitor-Generifl from Old Loyalty. Christie has a half'brother by Defaulter named Ra Jliri engaged in the Nursery Handicap. Both horses were well supported in their engagements at the Dunedin summer meeting on January 8, but failed.
