“For the month of December, 1943, during which the Wellington City Council charged its retail consumers 26d. a gallon for milk, “the price received by the producers within the 30-mile area was 9.6 Gd. a gallon.” says a statement by the secretary of the Wellington Dairy Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Mr. H. Cracknell. “The producers have been very severely hit bv the prevailing drought, and during the first 10 days of January, 1944 production in the 30-mile area averaged 9600 gallons a da.v as against 1J ,600 gallons a (lav in the same 10 days in 1943. “Even at the price of 9.<»<xl. a gallon the loss of 2000 gallons of milk a day means the daily sum of approximately 180 spread over about 140 producers.
