BEHIND GERMAN LINES

Aerial “Foreign Legion” (By Telegraph.—Press Aasn.—Copyright.) (Received January 18, 7 p.m.) LONDON, January 17. . .Russian paratroops of a new formation named the “Foreign Legion of the Air, ’ are operating actively far behind the German lines, particularly in the Baltic States. They are dropped at night, and before morning have made contact and been hidden by the underground organizations working against the Germans. Later they scatter through the towns, agitating and organizing'uprisings. Their aim is to lay the foundations for the liberation of Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia. The paratroops are usually natives of the areas and States into which they are dropped. They have little difficulty in passing'off faked identification papers, because the conquered areas are already filled with foreigners working in labour corps and factories. Many of the paratroops are men who were forced into labour corps by the Germans, but escaped to Russia. The Germans know that paratroops are being dropped behind their lines, and believe they are preparing the way for a series of gigantic “piston” offensives.
