65 MILES AN HOUR

Gale In Wellington Wellington yesterday experienced one of its worst northerly gales for some time. Springing up on -Monday-night, the wind rapidly increased to gale force, and at 1.45 p.m, yesterday had reached its maximum velocity of 65- miles an hour. Conditions in the city were particularly unpleasant, and as the blustery wind swept between the high buildings pedestrianswere forced to bend their heads in order to -struggle against it. A dry dust, accumulated during Wellington’s long tine spell, was readily whipped up by the wind and added considerably to the discomtort of those in the streets. The harbour, too, was affected by the gale, and its stormy appearance formed a marked contrast to its previous placidity. Cyclists travelling with the wind were probably the only ones to appreciate it as they bowled along with more than the usual turn of speed. Up till last evening- the wind had brought practically no rain and was showing signs of abating.
