Two Repatriated Officers

(British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, December 9.

Two prisoners of war who were recently repratriated to Britain gain awards, announces the “London Gazette. The first is Lieutenant the Marquess of Normanby, who was wounded during the Battle of France. In June, 1941, he was sent to Obernassfeld Hospital for an operation to a foot, and he became interested in the blind British prisoners of war there. For the rest of his captivity he devoted himself entirely to their welfare, learning Braille himself in order to teach it to the blinded men, and persuading the Germans to give him the assistance of a German teacher of the blind. As a consequence, the morale of the blinded prisoners of war, remained very high. He was repatriated with tuem, and now he becomes an M.B.E. Tlu* second is Captain F. K. Campbell, who in November, 1941, volunteered to accompany the expedition to Rommel’s headquarters at Sidi Rafa as an expert German linguist. The citation says: “Straight from an office in General Headquarters. without the desirable previous exercise or training, he marched over 18 miles in mountainous and precipitous country, and in company with another officer and one sergeant he forced an entrance into the German headquarters at Rafa. He overpowered and shot a guard who attempted to arrest them. AVnen his comrade was killed in attempting to enter a room inside Ihe building, Captain Campbell entered fearlessly mid threw two grenades, which silenced the opposition. Later, outside the building, he was severely wounded while superintending (lie operations, and realizing that the men of bis detachment could not easily tarry him back, he ordered them to complete their task and abandon him.” He receives Ihe D.S.O.
