“LOVE ON THE DOLE”

There are not many films that are worth bringing back to the same theatre a few weeks after they have finished their initial season, but “Lovp on the Dole” JOpera House) seems to b<* one of them. It is a story tljat is neither pretty nor pleasing, but it is intensely human. It is the story of England’s prewar poor; the. story of a working family whose world, was bounded by the factory and the slum; of courageous youth for whom tbe struggle was too uneven.

It is hard to recall a film iu which the acting honours have been so nicely divided. Deborah Kerr, as the heroine. gives gratifying restraint to the part of the. girl who gallantly fights a losing battle against tlie depression and the dole. And a line is due to the four old girls whi» find solace in the pawnshop, pseudo-spiritualism, and a “thrippenny one.” Their conversation is a mixture of tragic acceptance and unconquerable optimism, the sort of thing that saved London for England in the days of the blitz.
