Pilot Officer J. H. Verrall
Pilot Officer J. H. Verrall, recently awarded the D.F.C., is aged 22. He was educated at the Wanganui Technical College. He entered the stores branch of the New Zealand Railways as a cadet and served at both Eastown and Woburn. ID left New Zealand in May, 1942., for England as a sergeant pilot and was commissioned pilot officer in May, 1943. He was ail enthusiastic rower, gaining several firsts and seconds while a member of the Arauioho Boating Club. Both his brothers, S. A. aud F. G. Verrall, are serving with the ILiN.Z.A.F. The citation which accompanied the award read as follows; —“Pilot Officer Verrall is a determined and skilful captain of an aircraft and has successfully attacked some of the enemy’s most heavily defended targets, always displaying the greatest determination to press home his attacks. On two occasions he has cleverly outmanoeuvred enemy night fighters without suffering damage to his aircraft.”
