COUNCIL OF WORKS
New Government Organization (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, November 6. The Council of Works, the establishmetn of which was an important phase in the new set-up of the Public Works Department, is now in operation. The Minister of Works, Mr. Semple, said this morning that the advisory and consultative committee was now operating under the name of the Council of Works. The first meeting of the council was held recently. The members are the Minister of Works, the Commissioner of Works (Mr. Fleteber), the Engineer-in-Chief, Public Works Department. (Mr. Newnham), the Chief Electrical Engineer, Public Works Department (Mr. Kissel), the Assistant. Engineer-in-Chief (Mr. T. DI. Ball), the Under -Secretary of the Public Works Department (Mr. N. E. Hutchings), the Government Architect (Mr. R. A. Patterson), the Director of Housing Construction (Mr. G. W. Albertson), the Government Town Planner (Mr. J. W. Mawsonl. and n Treasury representative. Mr. J. W. Nissen, private secretary to the Minister of Works, has been appointed secretary.
“In the planning that, obviously must follow the conclusion of the war,” Mr. Sernnle said, “this council will have a very much wider application than just that of Government construction. All forms of construction, public and private. will require to be eo-ordinated and the council 'will be the co-ordinating body. A major object of the new set-up is lo find out. the latest methods of doing things. One of its tasks will he to search the world, if necessary, hvith (hat object i;i view so that we will keep abreast of the times in the world of construction.”
