Production Seen As N.Z.’s Role In War Now
Dominion Special Service. DUNEDIN, November 5.
“It has been felt that with the change In the aspect of the war in the Pacific our shores are not in the same danger of invasion as they were a year or 18 months ago, and that many of our men who are now with the armed forces would be better employed in producing foodstuffs and supplies for. the Allied armies, particularly those in the Pacific, area,” said the president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand, Mr. N. 13. Spencer, in his address to the annual conference. ■ “Foodstuffs and supplies are a very important item in modern warfare and it is very difficult to keep the right proportion between those fighting and those producing. Owing to our position as a base for the Pacific operations our role should surely change to that of producing more foodstuffs rather than men for the armed forces, lhe saving of transport alone would be an important factor.”
