COMBINED WAR EFFORT

Work Of League Of Mothers In Wellington Province

Matters incidental to the war effort were again given every attention during the past year, states the seventeenth annual report of the League of Mothers, Wellington Province, and members would go forward to the new year with renewed enthusiasm for a sustained war effort. The band of knitters had grown so considerably that nearly three times as many garments were knitted for the fighting services last year than in the one previously. On the special days allowed to the league, a team of workers attended regularly, packing parcels for prisoners of war. On a recent day the workers were honoured by a visit from Mrs. Roosevelt The provision of soldiers teas at the Y.W.C.A. and the Y.M.C.A. was continuing and every fortnight league members staffed the Allied Services Club, Wellington. , Cases of clothing had been sent to die war-stricken people of England and on one occasion when there was a number of garments on hand with no immediate prospect of shipping them, they were given to the local Residential Nurseries, who were in urgent need of children’s clothes. Help also went to the Pitcairn Islanders. Through their league president, it was learned that clothing was needed. Due to the war affecting shipping and tourist traffic, the Islanders were deprived of many necessities and excellent results came from the war committee’s appeal, made on their behalf. There was an increase of 290 members, said the report, and attendances were well maintained. Many branches had responded to the appeal .to promote the work of creches so that young mothers might at tend branch meetings. After five years as provincial president, Mrs, 11. 11. Cornish, Khandallah, is relinquishing that position. The report mentions Mrs. Cornish’s practical help and her valued leadership.
