DOWNING STREET VISIT
Second-Front Deputation LONDON, September 20. Police dispersed a crowd of about 500 people at the corner of Downing Street tonight after a deputation of three men and one woman had called at No. 10 to see Air. Churchill to demand the opening of a second front in France. AVhile the deputation was at No. 10 the crowd sang the “Internationale,” while others chanted “Invade France now.” AVhen the deputation was told that it was not permitted to see Mr. Churchill letters were handed in demanding replies as to why Hitler was given a month in which to organize his defence, why Alussolini had been allowed to escape, and why full advantage had not been taken of the crisis in Germany created by the capitulation of Italy and the Russian summer offensive. The deputation represented 40 trade unions, mainly shop stewards’ committees in the 'London area, and also the London district Communist Party.
