Sir,—l volunteered for service early in 1940 and served years in. the Middle East. I returned home two months ago and have now been discharged from the army. I have decided to take up a trade (carpentering) and I should like to know if I will be compelled to join a union. ■With many of my mates I resent compulsion and I should like to hear through “The Dominion” if the Government can force me to join a union.—l am, etc., MIDDLE EAST.■Wellington, September 16.

[As the law stands at present, you have no choice in tlie matter. Unionism is compulsory.]
