The repatriation benefits for service-, men are provided in regulations gazetted at Canberra. There will be no differentiation between men enlisted for service outside Australia and those enlisted for service within the Commonwealth. .Sustenance payments for periods not exceeding three months are provided for ex-servicemen awaiting employment. A soldier will receive £5 a fortnight, his wife £2/2/-, and a payment of IS/- will be made for each child up to a maximum of £2/14/-. Loans of up to £250 may be granted to repatriated soldiers and war widows with children to establish themselves in business. A free passage will be provided for servicemen and their wives, widows or children from abroad to Australia. An education board for soldiers’ children will bp appointed in each State.
Women members of the services will be eligible for all benefits, subject to modifications for a difference in responsibilities, in some cases, compared with the men of the forces.
The Minister ot Repatriation, Mr. Frost, stated that tip to June 30 last the number of applications from soldiers from this war for assistance in securing employment was 9030. Of the total 7437 had been placed in employment and 1334 others had found themselves jobs.
