CAVALLERO “COMMITS SUICIDE”

(British ‘>tll>'l:il Wireless.) RUGBY, September .16. Marshal Ugo Cavallero, former Italian Chief of the General Staff, has committed suicide, according to the German-con-trolled Italian news agency. He was “unable to bear the dishonour of the shameful capitulation of his country.” Cavallero commanded the Italian troops which were defeated at Guadalajara in the Spanish civil war. In this war he was defeated in Libya and then made Chief of Staff. He commanded the troops which were defeated in Greece, and Mussolini subsequently dismissed him. Immediately prior to bis soldiering, lie was one of the richest industrialists in Italy. It is probable that his death, like that of King Boris of Bulgaria, will remain a mystery, but, it is considered strange that he should consider the moment of bis release from captivity as a moment when life was no longer worth living.
