HEAVY WIND AND RAIN
Wintry Conditions In Wellington Winter has not yet spent its force in Wellington; Between Monday night and last night a fierce southerly gale swept the ci 5 ' andi suburbs, accompanied by heavy downpours of rain. .At Kelburn the rainfall since Monday night up to 9 o’clock last night had.tctirtU more than 200 points—a very heavy fall for this period of the year. Gusts of wind were not so severe yesterday as on Tuesday, the maximum being 50 miles an hour, compared with 62, but they were sufficient to make conditions most unpleasant. There was a considerable amount of surface water about, and many water channels were running close to overflowing. There was some improvement in the conditions shortly after 9 p.m. Road and rail services were not seriously affected by the weather. The Hutt River rose six feet, but kept well below danger point. A washout ocurred on the Akatarawa Road, two miles on the Waikanae side of The (Summit. It was stated by the Automobile Association (Wellington) yesterday that traffic could get through, but caution bad to he exercised. At Rongotai, which is more exposed to the south than Kelburn. the wind velocity was high. In exposed positions fences, trees and wireless installations suffered damage, mostly l of a minor nature.
