THEFT OF SPIRIT
American Seamen Jailed (By Telegraph.—Press Assoclatlou.) AUCKLAND, August 1.1. _ Two members of the crew of tin American ship pleaded guilty before Mr. Levien, S.M. today when jointly charged with the theft of 10 gallons of white spirit valued at £2O. “This offence is regarded more seriously because white spirit is part of the hospital supplies,” said Senior-Detective Walsh. The spirit, which has a particularly high alcoholic content, is in great demand at present, especially by illicit traders in liquor, ami there is a bhieli market for it." Each accused was sentenced to a month's imprisonment, and the Magistrate ordered that they be placed on board their ship if it sails before expiration of tlie sentence.
