NOXIOUS WEEDS
Spread Of Blackberry On Railway Land Dominion Special Service. HASTINGS, Augu«t 10. “The inspector is always chivvying ‘cockies’ about their noxious weeds, but you won’t get a ‘cocky’ to do anything while the Railways Department allows blackberry along the railway lines as it does,” said Cr. D. .Stewart, at the Hawke’s Bay County Council monthly meeting. Cr. E. H. Beamish pointed out. that at the approach to Waitangi Bridge there was an extensive blackberry patch to which no attention had been given. The chairman, Cr. 11. Harding, said that difliculty was caused by the failure of some Government departments to take steps to deal with this nuisance. While many farmers had done much clearing work, others had done nothing. The clerk, Mr. W. J. O’Connell, informed members that notices had been served on defaulting settlers and action would be taken against them shortly. Cr. 11. A. Nimon said that the only time to deal with blackberry was in January and not the winter, months. The 'attention of the Railways Department is to be drawn to the spread of blackberry on its reserves.-
