Candidates Announced NATIONAL PARTY AND INDEPENDENTS The following are additional National Barty candidates: — Otahuhu. —Warrant-Officer G. Hamilton. Enlisting in the first week of the war, W.O. Hamilton, who belongs to a well-known Waikato family, had two years’ active service in Greece and Libya and was then returned to New Zealand as an instructor. He was educated at Auckland Grammar School and Auckland University College. He as 3S years of age and. is married. Thames. —Mr. *\. A. Clark. Born at Little River, Canterbury, Mr. Clark has been farming at Elstow, near Te Aroha, for more than 20 years. He has been a member of the Rialto County Council and Elstow Drainage Board, and is. a member of the Te Aroha Borough Council. Dunedin Central. —Mr. L. J. T. Ireland. A member of the Dunedin City Council and chairman of its reserves committee, Mr. Ireland was born on a farm near’ Dunedin, and is 49 years of age. He served in the last war and in the present war joined the National Military Reserve, being mobilized for full-time service in December, 1941, as a lieutenant in the Third Otago Regiment. Mid-Canterbury.—Mr. R. G. Gerard, farmer, Mount Hutt. He is 32. a member of the Dominion Executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, North and MidCanterbury representative for the election of the Meat Producers’ Board, ehairman of the district primary production council, and a member of the committee of the Methven A. and B. Association. Independent Group.

Sinton, who was born and educated in Auckland. At the age of 22 he founded the wholesale hardware business of E. W. Sinton, Ltd. He is at present director of that company,, and is also a director of three other companies. At , the time of volunteering in the R.N.Z.A.F. he was vice-president of the Bureau of Importers and a member of the Hardware Price Committee. Flying Officer Sinton has travelled extensively, and m well known in business circles in Canada, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. He is 37 years of age. Mastertou. —Captain Justin Power, who is 49 years of age. He served four years overseas in the Great War and rose from the rank of private to captain. He commanded a Territorial unit after the war and was promoted to the rank of i major, resigning this rank to go overseas in the present war. He served for over two’ years in this war and was mentioned in dispatches for distinguished service. Captain Power, who lias excelled in all branches of sport, is a keen student of economic problems and of British and foreign politics. He has three sons serving in the present war. Auckland West. —Staff-Sergeant H. M. Bagnall, a member of a well-known sawmilling and farming family. He is a nephew of Mr. L. J. Bagnall, ex-mayor of Auckland. Sergeant Bagnall was connected with the transport industry in Auckland and Wellington for 15 years prior, to this war. MR. NASH ATLOWER HUTT The Minister of Finance. Mr. Nash, sitting member for Hutt, addressed about 40 friends and supporters in the Lower Hutt part of his electorate in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Lower Hutt, last night. The history of the Labour Administration, with special reference to his own activities, was reviewed by Mr. Nash, who was given an attentive hearing. He answered a number of questions, and at the conclusion of the meeting arrangements were made for the furtherance of the Labour interests in the district at the general election. EGMONT SEAT (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH. August 9. Mr. Edwin Thomas Cox, former mayor of Dunedin, has been chosen as the official Labour candidate for Egmont. HURUNUI SEAT (Bv Telegraph.—Press Association. 1 CHRISTCHURCH, August 9. Subject to the approval of the Dominion council, the National Party candidate for the Hurunui seat will be Mr W. H. Gillespie, farmer, of Bennetts. The selection was made at a meeting in Rangiora as a result of the retirement of Mr. Forbes, who has held the seat for 35 years. Seven nominations were received , including Mr. M. E. Lyons, National candidate in the recent Christ church East by-election, and Captain Richard Bethell, who is serving in ths Middle East. Mr. Gillespie served over seas in the last war. He is a member of the Oxford County Council, and is the Oxford Home Guard commander. CENTRAL HAWKE’S BAY WAIBUKURAU, August 9. Up to the present two candidates' have been announced for the Waipawa seat hi the forthcoming partliamentary election. Mr. C. G. Harker, the present holder of the seat, will stand in the interests of the National Party, and Mr. A. Grant Holins is contesting the seat as an Independent. NEW PLYMOUTH SEAT

Mr. Leonard Arthur Jury, a farmer, of Brixton, near New Plymouth. has been nominated as the Democratic Labour candidate for the New Plymouth seat, making a four-cornered contest. WESTERN MAORI Mr. Pei te Hurinui Jones, licensed Native interpreter, Hawera, has consented to his nomination as a Labour candidate for the Western Maori electorate. Mr- Jones's candidature was sponsored by Princess Te Puea and . members of the Maori King’s family. Mr. Jones joined the Native Department as associate and interpreter to the Judge of the Native Land Court at Wanganui. In 1928 he was made officer in charge of consolidation of Native lands titles in the King Country. With the initiation of Native land development, and, later of Native housing, he was appointed field officer in charge of the Te Kuiti office of the Native Department. In 1940 he resigned from the Native Department to take over his brother's practice as Native interpreter at Hawera. Mr. Jones has made a study of ancient Maori lore. He has translated into x Maori two of Shakespeare’s plays—“ The Merchant of Venice” and “Julius Caesar.” Mr. Jones has been intimately associated with the affairs of the Waikato, King Country, and Taupo tribes for nearly 20 years, and is familiar with the problems of the various tribes throughout rhe Western Maori electorate. Mr. Jones plr.yed Rugby football in the King Country and Wanganui, and was for four years New Zealand Maori tennis singles champion. He also was captain of the New Zealand Maori team which played the touring British Davis Cup team captained by Dr. Gregory, at RotoruaMr. Jones has twice previously unsuccessfully contested tho Western Maori seat as an Independent. coming - /meetings Mr. Norm Croft, National Party candidate, will address a meeting at the Walwetu School on Thursday night.
