U.S. LANDING IN NAZI REAR
Naval Aid In Sicily
LONDON, August 9. It is disclosed that an American force has made a daring landing from the sea behind the enemy lines on the north coast of Sicily.
The landing was made to assist the further American advance on land, and it was timed just as the Germans were rushing up reinforcements to meet the frontal attack. Before the Germans had realized what was happening 300 prisoners had been taken in the rear. The last of the reinforcements then retreated to the east. ... It is announced that the Americans have captured San Fretello, to the south of San Agata. The American troops driving from Troina toward Randazzo have captured Cesaro, eight miles to the north-east. The British advance from Bronte is continuing steadily. On the eastern sector. Eighth Army forces have captured Acireale and* another point near the coast 18 miles north of Catania. A correspondent reports that for eight hours on end Wellington bombers were over the Straits of Messina last night attacking enemy installations and shipping. . . . Referring to the American landing iff the north, the correspondent comments that now the Germans have a great deal more to worry about, with further landings possible.
