WILLKIE AND REPUBLICAN NOMINATION

Mr. Wendell Willkie informed members of the Republican National Committee that he is a candidate for the Presidential nomination in 1944 only if convinced the party intends to support a liberal and constructive programme on both domestic and foreign issues and the “old guard elements” cease to exercise control of the part-y policies, says the “New York Herald Tribune.” , . , , •„ , Mr. Willkie emphasised, he will not compromise his expressed views and principles, or make political deals in. attempts to placate the isolationists . and other groups within the party, which may see.k to forestall his nomination. Mr. M illkie expressed the opinion that Republicans could suceed, where the New Deal failed, hi developing a tangible jiractical Pt'ogrnmnie reflecting the new spirit, of liberalism surging throughout the world as a result of the war.
