C, broadcast to Greeks and Yugoslavs, transmitted at regular intervals today, declared: “Close your ranks. We undertake to inform you by the Allied radio when the hour strikes for general action. Meanwhile we count on you us members of the United Nations’ armies, to act with dis. cipline. Guerrillas and patriots will carry out as before the special tasks allotted to them in the common struggle.” A demonstration of protest, in which 30 persons were killed and 400 arrested, occurred in Athens following the extension of the Bulgarian occupation of Macedonia.

The guerrilla and sabotage activities in the Balkans have been intensified, and the German and Bulgarian reprisals have been most, violent. The Axis occupying forces killed more than 2400 Serbs in the last three weeks following upon a Chetnik offensive on July 21, which drove nearly a full German division back to Kraljevo. Yugoslavs are agitating for the. military use upon Italy's capitulation of more than 80,000 Serb soldiers who are prisoners in the Lipari Islands (near Sicily) and at Naples. The French National Committee at Algiers announced that hand-to-hand fighting between French patriots and German troops has occurred in Paris. The German commander cancelled army leave and established machinegun posts at the main street intersections. Widespread riots followed daylight attacks against German military personnel.
