ROADS DAMAGED BY ARMY TRAFFIC

Restoration Problem

“War Cabinet has allocated £60,(i00 for the extra maintenance of roads damaged by the wear and tear of heavy Army vehicles, which lias been phenomenal,” said the Minister of AVorks, Mr. Semple, when the vote for the maintenance of Public AVorks and Services was discussed by the House of Representatives yesterday. Air. Semple added that War Cabinet's-allocation would not meet the full extent of highway repairs, which had gone beyond maintenance in many parts of the country. He proposed to bring the question before Cabinet to sec if ways and means of restoring highways damaged by Army vehicles could tie provided.

Mr. Semple said that Army vehicles had chopped the base of some roads to pieces, and the problem was much more than merely repairing them. It would '.l impossible for the counties concerned to do the work out of the grants made to them. The subject was raid’ll by Air. Massey (Opposition. Franklin), who referred to the extraordinary damage to roads as a result of military operations. He said the foundations of some had been completely shattered, and he sought an assurance that the Government would make good the damage.
