WATERSIDE WORK
Average Hours And Wages
“I notice that there was a statement in the House of Representatives last night about waterside work, the tenor of which was that the men were working an 84-hour week. Would it be possible, Mr, Chairman, to have figures showing the board’s experience in this?” asked Mr. J. W. Andrews at last night's meeting of the Wellington Harbour Board. “The statement in the House may have applied to men employed by 'Shipping Companies, but for my own information I should be glad to know our experience, if possible.” The chairman, Mr. W. H. Price : The board’s A Class casual workers averaged 49.3 hours a week over the 52-wcck period of our last financial year ending .September last for an average weekly wage of £lO/12/10. Of the 49.3 hours averaged, the overtime hours averaged 18.1 a week and the day hours 31.2. These are the only figures available to us. Mr. J. O. Johnson : I don’t know what this is for. Mr. Chairman. Mr. Andrews: I want the figures for my own information. Mr. Johnson: It is quite a general thing for a watersidor to work 84 hours ill a week.
