Patients in the New Zealand hospital now enjoy full use of a new modern swimming pool, one of the many amenities of the Helwan Kiwi Club. The pool was officially opened in the presence in Lord Killearn, Negib el Hilali Pasha, Education Minister, Lady Freyberg and senior officers of the N.Z.E.F., aS well as nurses, soldiers and civilians. < Built by the Egyptian Government, assisted by grants from the New Zealand Patriotic Fund and Red Cross, the pool is an up-to-date structure. After the opening several prominent Egyptian and New Zealand swimmers and divers gave an exhibition. A relay race was won by the New Zealand team, consisting of Parsons (South Canterbury), Lowe (Canterbury), McGrath (Southland), Waters (Wellington), Welch (Wanganui) and Ratema (Rotorua).
New Zealand yachting teams had close contests with R.A.F. teams in events at Aboukir Bay, near Alexandria. The races were for snipe and national class boats arranged during a two-day carnival, New Zealand and the R.A.F. securing two wins each. Members of the New Zealand Railway Construction and Maintenance Group conducted a successful athletic meeting at the American University ground at Beirut. The 10th Construction Company compiled the highest aggregate of points ahead of the 13th Company and Group Headquarters and the Ninth Survey Company.
Though Gates was top scorer with 50 and Hayward took seven wickets for 26 in six.,overs, the New Zealand workshops cricket team failed by three wickets to beat R.A.C. base depot. The New Zealanders scored only 87.. The New Zealand Armoured Regiment 160 (Fisher 72) beat South African Air Force base depot by 51 runs.
