BIG CHINESE VICTORY SUMMED UP

Battle Of Upper Yangtze (Received June IS, 10.20 p.m.) LONDON, June 17. A Chinese Army spokesman in Chungking today declared that approximately 40,000 Japanese have been killed and wounded in the 40-day battle on the upper Yangtze River, and less than two-c thirds of the entire Japanese force man-' aged to escape from the Chinese trap. Though the Japanese for a time seriously threatened the Chinese “rice bowl,” the Chinese have virtually recovered the entire area in their strong counter-of-fensive supported by American and Chinese airmen.

Another message states that American flyers, fighting against odds of eight to one, shot down six Japanese planes and probably shot down four more in a violent battle over Changshu, in the Kiangsi Province. The Americans suffered no losses. <

The danger of Japanese cajolery of •China was emphasized by Madam Chiang Kai-shek, in addressing a Press conference in Ottawa today. “The Japanese, early in the war, found that violence could not subjugate the Chinese,” she said. “They have since resorted to cajolery. The Japanese are expert propagandists. They are telling the Chinese that China has not received help from the United Nations and promising every help if China will throw ill her lot with Japan." “They are pointing out the military and economic aid given without stint to the Nanking puppet Government.”
