MAIL FOR NAVAL PERSONNEL

Speeding Up Delivery

A scheme has been instituted whereby the time in transit of mail for all naval officers and ratings serving overseas will be considerably reduced. At present the majority of mails for naval officers and ratings serving overseas, ejg., in ships of the Royal Navy, are addressed' ILMJS. “(Name of Ship,' C/o. GiP.'O., London, by which they are redirected as necessary. This means that mail posted in New Zealand 1 for an officer or rating serving in a ship .stationed in, say. the Indian Ocean, would be forwarded to the G.P.0., London, for redirection to the port from which the ship is operating. Considerable delay may thus occur in the receipt of mails. To a large extent this will be avoided under the scheme now introduced. In future, mail for officers, and ratings serving overseas other than in H.M.N.Z. ships or establishments should be addressed as indicated in the following examples:— Where the name of the ship is known: — H. S. Brown, Able Seaman, N.Z. 7578, I-IJM.S. “Name of Ship,” British Fleet Mail. (N.B. —If the name of the ship is known this address should be used for mall for all naval officers and ratings, including members of the (Royal Navy, Royal Australian Navy, etc.; Where the name of the ship is not known: — (i) 'Letters for New Zealand officers and ratings: ■H. 8. Brown, Able Seaman. N.Z. 7578, C/o" High Commissioner for New Zealand, 415 Strand, LONDON, W.C.2. (11) Parcel mail for New Zealand officers or ratings: H. S. Brown, Able -Seaman, N.Z. 7578, C/o. New Zealand War Services Association, 4,15 Strand, LONDON, W.C.2.

It is emphasized that the above does not apply to mail for ships and establishments of the Royal New Zealand Navy. Mail for personnel serving in ships or establishments of the Royall New Zealand Navy should, unless correspondents are informed otherwise (by naval personnel, be addressed either C/o. C.P.0., Auckland. or C/o. G.P.0., Wellington. Full details, i.e., name, rank or rating, official number, and name of ship should also be included.
