SHORTAGE OF PIG MEATS
The number of pigs proiluccil in New Zealand this season was 100,000 shoit ot’ requirements, due to the presence ot large numbers of Allied servicemen tn the Pacific, said Mr. 11. M. I lerson, acting superintendent of pig production, at the annual meeting of the Waikato Pig Council. Pig meats wot*. d need to be imported if the requirements could not. be supplied, and there was an attendant risk of introducing two diseases, swine fever and foot and mouth disease. The chairman, Mr. P. O. Bonham, appealed to producers to do all I hey cotud to increase the output. Cropping areas should be prepared for the coming season and sown should be mated now. Lne frequent changes in weights and prices during the last two years had had a serious effect on the industry. Greater stability in the regulations governing weights was needed.
