CONCENTRATED APPLE JUICE

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) NELSON, May .7.

Samples of concentrated apple juice prepared at Cawthron Institute are to be submitted to the Internal Marketing Department by the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation for its opinion. It the concentrated juice proves of commercial value, it may open a new avenue for the disposal of reject fruit in the Nelson district. „ , At a meeting of the Cawthron Trust Board, the director of the institute, Sir Theodore Bigg, exhibited samples ot the concentrated juice prepared in the chemical laboratory by Dr. 11. O. Askew. The juice from a number of different varieties of apple had been prepared in concentrated form, he said, and it showed a considerable range in taste and character. The Stunner and Lord Wolseley varieties had a sharp acid character, while Delicious were definitely sweet. Certain other varieties, such as Granny Smith, were intermediate in character1S Members of tlie board expressed the opinion that under wartime conditions, concentrated juices might prove valuable by virtue of their superior keeping qualities and saving of transport and bottles. In the United States of America certain tobacco manufacturers were now using apple syrup made bj' the concentration'of apple juice, for flavouring tobacco.
