THEFT OF RINGS
William Marne Clark, shop assistant, aged 28. was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment by Mr. Stilwell, S.M., in the -Magistrates’ Court, 'Wellington, yesterday for stealing from a bouse in Kent Terrace on March 8 a -three-stone diamond ring and an olivine ring, of a total value of £2l, tlie property ot Betty Si. Clair Bell. Detective-Sergeant W. McLennan said that accused had attended a party, and had asked for a drink of water, and while the water was being brought he stole the rings. He gave one ring to the woman lie was going to marry. Mr. G. I. Joseph, in making n plea for probation, said that drink was accused’s trouble. He had been drinking at. Um party, and thought (lie rings were valueless, lie was prepared to make restitution, and to take out a prohibition order. The magistrate said that, in view of accused’s bad record, which included breaking, entering, and theft, probation was out of the question. An order was made for the return of the ring which had been given to the woman.
