U.S. WAR TRANSPORT
(Received March 29, 7 p.m.) WASHINGTON, March 28. The War Department has disclosed that the army' moved 891,827 men overseas in the first year of the war and at present is shipping an average of 821 b. of supplies and equipment daily for each man. . The total shipment overseas amounts to 10,475,000 tons over shipping lanes, averaging 14,000 miles in length. The War Department also released comparative figures for the same period in World War One of 300,603 men transported overseas, 431 b. for each man shipped daily, and 1,727,000 tons-over shipping lanes, averaging 0500 miles. Cargoes today sharply emphasize increased mechanization, the department, says. For example, the quantity of petroleum and petroleum products shipped overseas in the first year of the pre-, sent war exceeds 80 times the amount shipped iu the same period iu tlie last war.
