COLOURFUL DAHLIAS

Show At Northland '

The 'Northland Horticultural Society staged a successful dahlia show in St. Anne’s Hall last Saturday afternoon. At the official opening ceremony Mr. G. S. Nicoll, president, introduced Mrs. Barclay, wife of the Minister of Agriculture, who. complimented the society on such a colourful and interesting display. Mrs. Barclay dealt with the satisfaction and pleasure gained by growers in the treatment of soil, seeds, and. plants—the growth and care of flowers —and the culmination of Hie work of nature. Mrs. Stewart, M.l’., accompanied Mrs. Barclay on the. platform. A pleasant afternoon was spent by the large gathering of exhibitors and visitors and Mr. and Mrs. Nicoll entertained the company to afternoon tea.

The final show of the season was a great success, thanks to .the untiring efforts of Mrl T. Boyes (secretary), Miss R. Sleeth (assistant secretary 1. arid an energetic committee.

The champion dahlias were exhibited by Mr. A. Manton. (Iris Ransome), and Mr. M. McDonald (Tliornlea), and the champion hydrangea by Mr. I’. E. Wilkinson (Lord Lambourfie). Mr. Mantou exhibited a splendid show of dahlias and Mr. D. Maxwell (Kilbirnie), a popular (show of begonias. Prize List.—Dahlias, open class: Mr. A. J. Mantou, 7 firsts, 4 seconds; Mr. C.
