WOLF CUB LEADERS

Training Course At Lowry Bay

Between 20 and 30 wolf cub leaders recently attended a short course of training by Miss Nancy Wilson, Dominion commissioner for cubs, at AA irihaua, Lowry Bay. Though chiefly for the Hutt Valley seouters and organized by Mrs. Saunders and Nirs. Porter, the district officers, delegates from Nelson, Wellington and Mastertoil attended. Some, who are now serving in the forces got leave to he present. In the absence of the district commissioner, Nirs. J. Vogel welcomed the visitors ami said how glad she was that they were able to meet and practise cubbing in such beautiful surroundings mid stressed the importance of the "out” in scouting. To many this was the first time spent under canvas and camp life was quite a novelty. Meals cooked in a camp oven and served in the open proved most a ppetizing. Sessions on cub training were given and many new games, jungle dances and songs were taught. The camp fire circle, which is a clearing in the bush, was used with a real fire—for the first time since (lie lighting restrictions came in. On Sunday morning the campers mounted the hill to the bush chapel for cubs’ own service. 'l’he theme of the address was the teaching of the promise. "Duty to God.’’ to the cub. The setting for this impressive yet simple service was ideal, among the giant birch trees. The birds, tuis. whiteheads, riflemen and fantails, joined in with their song of praise.

A discussion on Sunday afternoon on post-war scouting showed that all present realized the need for greater effort and for higher standards in pack work; that in cubbing the foundations are laid of a new world in the hearts and minds of the rising generation. The future is theirs aifd I hey must: carry forward the torch ol civilization and Christ iu nity.
