FIGHTING IN SINYANG

Chinese Assail Important Enemy Base CHUNGKING, January 14. Fighting is going on within the city walls of Sinyang, an important Japanese base in southern Honan. A Chinese communique announced the recapture of Sinyang, but this has been amended, the army spokesman saying the Chinese have not yet obtained complete possession. Its capture could be considered the most significant Chinese victory for mouths.

Tile army spokesman declared that the Japanese campaign in the Tapieh mountain area had failed and the Chinese had reoccupied all the main centres. The Japanese, employing 60,000 troops, suffered 3000 casualties. A communique also reports the recapture of Hsuhih, 3G miles north-east of Sliangcheng, and other points in Honan Province.

The advancing Chinese forces are closing in on the enemy positions near Kwangcliuau and Kwangshan.
