The Late Lady Carncross

A keen patriotic worker in the last war, and with her interest maintained in the work in tlie present war, the late Lady Carncross, whose death occurred in Bitham this week at the age of 8u years, was also closely associated with various social activities during her lifetime. J lie widow of Sir Waller Carncross, Speaker of the Legislative Council for o 0 years, Lady Carncross was before her marriage Aliss Alary Johnston, daughter of the late Thomas and Alary Jobns_tou, Dunedin. Born in Edinburgh in 1857, she came to New Zealand as a child in the ship John Phillip Laing and lived with her parents at Oamarn and Dunedin for some years. Alarricd in St. Paul’s Pro;Cathedral, Dunedin, on April 30, 1883, Sir AA alter and Lady Carncross celebrated their golden wedding in 1933. Sir AA alter died in June, 1940. After her marriage Lady Carncross lived ut Alosgiel, near Dunedin, for a number of years, arriving at Eltham in 1901. She was a life-long worker for the Church of England, being a member of the choir for many years, a past-presi-dent of the Plunket Society, of which she was patron at the time of her death, and n former president of the Eltham Croquet Club. r . .. n Her second sou. Lieutenant Cyril Carncross, was killed in the Great War. She is survived by one son. Air. Claude Garncross, Eltham, and two daughters, Airs. Beechey, Marton, and Aliss Sybil Carncross, Eltham, and eight graudchiudren.
