NAVAL CASUALTIES The following naval casualties were reported yesterday:— FARQUHAR, James C„ E.R.A., -t/class, R.N. (N.Z.), previously reported missing, now reported died from exposure. Mr. Thomas C. Farquhar, Rahotu, New Plymouth if) LEIGH, Frederick AV. J., Acting Leading Telegraphist, missing, presumed killed. Mr. Frederick H. AV. Leigh, 59 Somerlield St.. Christchurch (f) Captain J. G. Wynyard Captain J. G. Wynyard, who is reported to have been killed in action, was well known as a Waikato and New Zealand liugby football representative. He was a member of the New Zealand team wkieh toured Great Britain in 1035, and he also represented New Zealand in Australia in 1038. Major Irvine Hart Major Irvine Hart, who died of wounds on November 2, was second in command of the Maori Battalion, lie was born at Carterton 38 years ago and attended St. Patrick’s College, Wellington. From there lie went to Victoria University College, where he took his LL.M, degree. He represented Victoria College at football and boxing. For a time lie was employed by Messrs. Meek and von Haast, solicitors, Wellington, and it was at that lime that he' represented the Wellington province at Rugby. Returning to Carterton, he also gained representative honours for both Carterton and. the AVairarapa, and participated in the North Island trials. He was a member of the AVairarapa Ranfnrly Shield team, and was recognized as one of the best backs the district ever produced. In 1931. with the departure of his uncle, Sir Herbert Hart, for Samoa, Major Hart joined the legal firm of Hart, Daniel] and Hart lit Masterton. and was a member, of this firm till he volunteered for service in September. 1939, and entered camp with the First Echelon. Be'fore the outbreak of war lie held a commission In the First Hawke's Bay Regl meat, and after sailing with tile Second Eehelon lie saw service in England. Greece and the first Libyan campaign. He was three times wounded during ids service in Greece and Libya. Ueeetiily lie was appointed Seeond-in-Command of Hie Maori Battalion. He leaves a widow (a daughter of Mrs. and the late Mr. D F Thurston) and two .daughters. •At the Masterton Magistrates' Court tribute was paid to Major Hart’s memory by members of the legal profession Hie Court, and its officials. Lieutenant A. F. Widdowson Lieutenant Arnold Freeman Widdowson. who was recently killed In action In the Middle East, was the younger sou of Mrs. 11. Y. AViddowsqn, Sumner, and stepson of Mr. H. Y. Widdowson, 0.8. E. He was educated at Sumner nnd at Christchurch Boys’ High School. When war' broke out he was farming at Palmerston North, aiid lining a keen member of the territorial service. enlisted and left with Hie Ist Ei-hePin as a sergeant. He was among th- first to qualify tor a eommlslon overseas, and was later promoted to lieutenant. I.lentenant AViddowson married Sister Rita Smith of the Kasr el Alni Hospital. Cairo, last February. He was a popular oille'-r ind was keen mi sports, especially -od tennis. Corporal K. E. Power Corporal K. E. Power, who lias been killed In action, was assistant clerk to the Mastertoil County Council, having been employed by it for 12 years. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. F. Power, nnd was educated at the Walrarnpa High School. He was it member of the Masonic I.edge and of the Royal Arch Chapter of the fraternity. He was a keen member of Hie Riverside Golf Club, and of the Masterton Savage Club. Ills two sinters. Mrs Dunn, Grey Lynn, and Mrs. Dombroskl, Ilawera, and his brother. Douglas, who is serving overseas, are left.
