Russians Push Forward Below Ilmen

(Received September 28, 9.45 p.m.) LONDON, September 27. Moscow officially reports that on one aector of the Caucasus front- the Russians' withdrew in One ■ locality under numerical pressure. Russian pilots in She Mosdok area, where fierce fighting is proceeding, twice attacked au enemy aerodrome and destroyed 11 planes. In the Sinyavino area, south-east of Leningrad, the Russians mopped up enemy groups which had driven a wedge into their lines. Berlin radio said, “The German defences have gone underground in the Rzhev area. The earth is the only safe place in .that hurricane of death. The Russians are incessantly attacking, but we retain our positions.” The Stockholm correspondent of “The Times” reports that the Russians have feurged forward from the Lovat River between the Kholm Marshes and Lake Ilmen and crossed the Polista River. The Germans now refer to battles south-west instead of south-east of Lake Ilmen.
