DELIVERY OF BREAD
Further Improvement Possible
“Bread zoning having been in operation a week now,” said the North Island Transport Zoning Officer, Mr. 11. M. Christie yesterday, “It is possible to see that without interfering with the output of the individual bakeries further improvements in deliveries can be effected.
“A number of the bakeries are delivering with light vans, which carry only a comparatively small number of loaves. This means that they have to make tod many trips to carry out their deliveries. The institution of a delivery pool, or even the establishment of a joint delivery company, such as is already in operation in Napier in the delivery of some commodities, would permit the use of larger vans. These vans need not be of a size requiring more than car-size tyres. “The Napier system has proved a great success,” Mr. Christie said, “and steps are already in progress to form a similar organization in Hastings. The pooling permits further “blocking” of the deliveries, and helps further to eliminate parallel running of delivery vans.”
