CONTRACT LET

Strengthening Wellington

Town Hall

The contract for the work of strengthening the Wellington Town Hall has been let to Wellington Builders, Ltd., a combination of contracting builders consisting of Messrs. H. D. Field, E. R. Glass and L. Arcus, who have pome together with the object of pushing forward with the work occasioned by the earthquakes. This firm is also attending, on a percentage basis, to the alterations and repairs to the traffic office (the old Fire Brigade station) opposite the Town Hall, so that no matter what the state of the -weather there will be work for the men.

The contractors have already done some preliminary work within the big hall, but they will not start in earnest till the quarters for the town clerk and staff, the city solicitor and staff and the city treasurer and staff are made ready in the new Central Public Library, as the din of falling masonry will be too great for concentration on, clerical tasks. The town clerk and staff and the city solicitor and staff are being accommodated in the newspaper and magazine rooms of the library, which are now being partitioned for that purpose with building board. The city valuer has already taken up his quarters in the library. He and) his assistant are now accommodated in the children’s story-telling room. It is expected that the change back again to the Town Hall will not be made till after the Christmas holidays.
