FARMING TOPICS

Don’t Misunderstand

Earlier this month there was published throughout the Dominion an account from Britain of “the final report of the Expert Committee on compensation and betterment (increase of land values) in respect to the public control of the use ot land, i.e„ in Britain. An uncritical reading of this report, together with certain comment likewise cabled might have given the impression that Britain was going in for land nationalization. The committee’s chief concern was the control pt land taken for city expansion, and .in particular the desirability .ot checking what has been termed “ribbon development,” this being the stringing out ot housing along highways leading from the "Tent towns. A second important matter was to amend the laws governing the takinv of land for public purposes, in effect? to bring the facilities much into line with those we are accustomed to in New Zealand. Quite definitely did the committee reject proposals for the pooling of land ownership and nationalizing the land. Help Production Councils. District committees of primary production councils have been called on to report needs of shearing labour; and also the acreage of potatoes due to be planted before this years ending. Information upon this latter is wantpd from everv grower, outside a borough area,, who "rows one acre or more. Each committeeinan will have a list of farmers in his territory, and is required to submit to his council secretary, the acreage grown by each farmer. Nil returns will be rendered where the acreage is less than one. Here are two jobs that must be done. Is it fair to expect tlie individual comniitteeinaii to do it alone? bhould bo have to get tlie information from each farmer? He certainly must compile it ami furnish it to his secretary, that task can, however, be rendered a great deal easier if every farmer concerned will be thoughtful enough to send in his statement upon potatoes, and upon shearing, it tiiis also be needed. Let this information be furnished quickly, accurately ami willingly. Do not have to be chased up for it.”' Breeds of Pigs. v „ Volume 23 ol the Herd Book (N A Pi" Producers’ Association) shows the following entries, which indicate the relative popularity of the various breeds m this countryßerkshires, Ml , worths, 623; Large Blacks, 401, Large Whites. 258; Durroe Jerseys, lb. lotal. 2229.
