ASSAULT IN TAXI
Two Young Men Charged
An assault on a taxi-driver in Itakau Road, Hataitai, on Saturday night had its sequel in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday, when Albert Waka Rika, sawman, aged 22, and Albert Hura, waiter, aged 21, were charged before Mr. Stout, S.M. The driver, L. R. W. Baker, told the Court how he had been struck on the face by one of three passengers, and how one of them had jumped on the running board as he was driving away, opened the rear door, and then clutched him by the throat. The taxi had run into a bank before it could be stopped, and his assailant had then taken the ignition keys. , On behalf of both accused, who pleaded not guilty, it was submitted that the driver had'noticed that the men had been drinking and had attempted to overcharge them. An argument had resulted Rika was sentenced to 14 days hard labour and Dura fined £5.
